RAVEN is 6 women from varied professional backgrounds, who share the joy of singing and creating music together.

The group consists of 3 Teachers, a local business woman, a Stenographer, an Ofsted Inspector and a Community Events Manager.

RAVEN formed in 2004, after several of the women met via different social routes and found a shared interest in medieval, old English/traditional music specifically singing harmonies and acapella, as well as playing piano, recorders and percussion instruments.

They met once or twice a month during that year at Burniston Chapel - as it has wonderful acoustics and was offered free of charge! Initially, these rehearsals were for just their own enjoyment.

Regarding the name: there are references to a ‘pagan black’ in a song they perform called Pictish Girl which describes the mysterious, earthy and spirited – reflecting their style of music.

A concert was organised that Spring at Burniston Chapel to say a big thank you to the congregation for use of the venue. This was a great success and people encouraged RAVEN to expand their concert programme and produce a CD. This made the group realise that their music could be enjoyed by a wider audience.

Since then RAVEN have performed at:
THE STEPHEN JOSEPH THEATRE, Scarborough

THE BAND ROOM, Farndale

THE ROBINSON INSTITUTE, Glaisdale

THE OPEN MIC NIGHTS AT CELLARS, Scarborough

SCALBY VILLAGE HALL at a special evening organised by Scalby Parish Council for a VIP group from Pornic, France. They have been invited back to Pornic to perform at the town’s cultural festival in summer 2007

THE EVERLEY HOTEL, Hackness

SCARBOROUGH IN BLOOM AWARD CEREMONY
Ocean Room, Scarborough Spa Complex,

MR MILO’S COFFEE SHOP, Scarborough

THIXENDALE VILLAGE HALL, Thixendale

RAVEN’s CD was recorded in the summer of 2006 by Chris Burrell and the CD graphics were designed by Helen Korndorffer. It is priced at £10 from Mojo’s and will also be on sale at their future concerts.

THE LOOK

RAVEN have recently commissioned Jennie Boyer from Arabesque Designs, based at Thixendale near York, to create an individual style for them which are based on the iridescent colours of the Raven.

THE MUSIC

RAVEN performs an extensive programme from traditional to contemporary and medieval to avant-garde, with original arrangements and compositions.

Some pieces are accompanied by keyboard, recorders and percussion with some acapella and some are instrumentals. However it is the voices which hold the group together - as well as the fantastic crunchy chords!

We encourage each other to extend our musical talents and have recently introduced several different acoustic instruments – guitar, flute and mandolin.

Both Karen and Sarah have been able to develop their composing talents and this has given them a new lease of life for writing.

THE EMOTION

Everyone gets a real buzz from performing; there is incredible emotion, creative energy and huge joy when the group are together.

Our singing is joyous, ecstatic and emotional: one audience member described a performance as giving them “goose bumps on goose bumps on goose bumps”!

A lovely spin off is that genuine friendships have formed and RAVEN can often be seen having the odd meal or two in Scarborough – seen and always definitely heard!!
