Coastival 2016

2016 was all about exploring and celebrating our wonderful coast, its landscapes, people and stories in all their glory.

Our four new Coastival Commissions took our audiences under water for a magical sound and digital projections event, and behind bars at the jail for our own Coastival Modern experience. There was a magical, illuminated evening adventure in the Spa Gardens, and there was the chance for people to experience talking selfies on a gigantic scale.

The headline acts were Cast, Asian Dub Foundation, Snake Davis and Hope & Social, but there was also a variety of other free music to! Backseat Mafia were back with a weekend full of cutting edge music, and The Den, Scarborough's most groovy music spot, joined us for the first time with an eclectic mix of roots-inspired acts in Farrer's Bar. Plus there was our usual late night Engine Room with special guests DJ Format and King Zepha, and there were choirs and classical events at the Art Gallery and the Rotunda.

Rollercoastival for children returned and was as popular as ever. Animated Objects Theatre were back again with their puppetry, in the shape of The Song of the Leviathan; the Old Parcels Office at the Railway Station became a visual arts gallery and our spectacular opening event, Polar Quest, all the way from the Spraoi Festival, Ireland, took us on a heroic journey over the icy wastes (otherwise known as Scarborough Seafront!) inspired by Shackleton and his crew.
