Volunteers Needed for Art Research Project

Rural Arts are looking for 15 volunteers, over 60 to take part in a research project that we are working on with Leeds Beckett University to collect evidence on the impact that participatory arts activities have on the well being of a group of older adults.

We will be using innovative wearable technology that will measure participants’ responses to the sessions followed by interviews with a university researcher.

The project will aim to identify which aspects of the activities are effective in bringing about positive outcomes such as increased feelings social inclusion and more general wellbeing.

We are planning to hold the session at Rural Arts on Mondays over the next three to four months and we need 3 groups of 5 volunteers. Each group will participate in three different arts based activity sessions for example - craft, creative writing, digital art etc. and will also need attend two follow-up discussion sessions, a week after the activity. During the activity and the post-activity discussion volunteers will wear an electro-dermal activity-tracking wristband. The wristband will directly measure emotional responses, which will be interpreted via observation and post-activity discussion.

The arts activities will be devised and delivered by Rural Arts and based on activities we have undertaken with similar groups and will be fun and free.

We will need to survey volunteers as well as volunteers wearing the wristbands. This study tracking participants at intervals will gather evidence on the extent to which the group activity, and later reflection upon it, has enhanced social wellbeing.

The results will identify and guide development of arts activities, which provide the greatest benefit and enhance the social well being of older adults creating a valuable community resource.

We are holding a taster session on Monday 26 June at 2pm at Rural Arts where you can meet the research team and try on electro-dermal activity-tracking wristband and find out more.  If you would like to take part or book onto the taster session on the 26 June- please get in touch by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots.
