The theme of Coastival 2015 was ‘Back in Time’, an opportunity to celebrate the town’s musical heritage.
- Category: Past Projects
With 54 events, 50 of them free, this two day celebration had Reverberation as its centrepiece, an evening of live musicians and DJ music that also included a memorabilia exhibition of Scarborough’s musical heritage. Live sounds came from Tom Townsend, Vertical Dead Quartet, The Pop Pigs, Prendo & The Good Friends, plus DJs from the town’s music venues.
Some of Coastival’s favourite musicians returned for a performance of music in Timeless. Among the acts appearing were Smoove and Turrell, Nubiyan Twist and The Wonderful Sound of the Cinema Organ. Local choirs from the Scarborough and Whitby area came together and provided us with a day of music, including the Coastival Choir, formed on the day of the event.
The Rat Race, from the Frolicked Outdoor Puppet Theatre Company, was an inventive piece of interactive theatre that allowed members of the public to go inside a giant piece of cheese, and then perform tasks to see if they could escape the rat race.
For the rest of the festival there was a mix of music, dance, visual arts, exhibitions and other activities. Local artists exhibited their exciting and innovative work at venues throughout the town and Rollercoastival gave us a mix of creative stuff for kids, including an Art Drop-In, Storytelling and fun-filled music sessions of rhythm games and actions songs led by Cathy Roberts.
