ALL WRAPPED UP

From 17th July Scarborough Art Gallery are pleased to host a display of land & seascape inspired ‘wearable art’ textiles by Lindsey Tyson.

The exhibition, based in the Gallery Coffee Lounge, will feature a hand picked collection of Lindsey’s wonderfully atmospheric and infinitely desirable silk & felt wraps and scarves and other felt artwork and vessels.

As with most of Lindsey’s work, her scarves and wraps are inspired by her surroundings and in particular by the natural landscape and the sea. Her work is deeply evocative of the moods and atmosphere we experience in our surroundings – a crisp autumn walk, a hazy summer afternoon or a fresh seaside stroll; somehow Lindsey has managed to capture all of these moods in her work.

As Lindsey explains, ‘I currently make, sell and exhibit what I call 'wearable art'. My scarves and wraps are made using the ‘nuno’ felting technique where a combination of hand-dyed wool and woven fabrics are felted together to create beautifully soft, light, warm, sumptuous works of art, and above all, work that is interesting, challenging and unique.’

‘Felt-making is such an amazing medium in that you can form it into almost anything, whether it is fine and flat, or thick and three dimensional. The possibilities are vast and although there are many preconceived perceptions of what felt is and how it can be used, I believe it is becoming more widely acknowledged as an important form of expression and craftsmanship.’

Lindsey’s business ‘Textile Art & Design’ is currently based in Woodend Creative Workspace and supplies work throughout the world and is exhibited widely throughout the region.

‘All Wrapped Up’ goes on display from 17 July to Sunday 12 September 2010. For further information contact Scarborough Art Gallery on 01723 374753 or www.scarboroughartgallery.org.uk.
